HOW’S YOUR SLEEP…?

As the title of this post says “I can’t sleep because of…I don’t know”.  I believe we do, we just don’t take the time to think about it.

If you take 30 seconds and scroll FB/IG/Twitter you’ll see a number of posts about people not sleeping.  Check these social media platforms in the morning and you’ll see more posts, and it’s astounding.

Our inability to get proper sleep has become the new normal.  If you tell someone you slept 8-hours last night they’ll certainly throw you some shade, in most cases.  We need to do better.

Your body needs sleep,  just as it needs air and food to function at its best. During sleep, your body heals itself and restores its chemical balance. Your brain forges new thought connections and helps memory retention.  Without enough sleep, your brain and body systems won’t function normally. It can also dramatically lower your quality of life.”

If you’ve seen my posts about hydration and its effects on the central nervous system (CNS) this may sound familiar.  Sleep depravation affects your Central Nervous System (CNS), Immune System, Respiratory System, Digestive System, Cardiovascular System and Endocrine System, for starters.

OK DR. OBVIOUS!  I know, easier said than done.  Now how do I fix this…?

Awesome question.  The easiest place to start is figuring out why you’re not sleeping.  Here’s 2 places to start.

#1).  Are you stressed about tomorrow, whether it’s work, travel, relationships, or finances?  Chances are there’s nothing you can do about any of these things at 10pm.  Take 2 minutes and talk to yourself. “Self, there’s nothing I can do about this right now, I’ll get some sleep and tackle it in the morning when I’m fresh and rested.” BTW, worrying doesn’t solve anything!  A huge contributor to this is procrastination (I know firsthand).  So handle your crap and then it’s off your brain.

#2). Put your dang phone away.  There are enough studies out there showing this is a huge contributor to sleep deprivation.  From the bright lights to the dumb content we scroll through, it doesn’t help.

Try these instead of posting your insomnia woes on FB at 3:20am!

Here’s a great article I quoted from…
